Spoon-billed Sandpiper, nearing extinction

Help save the Spoon-billed Sandpiper!

This sparrow-size sandpiper with the spoon-shaped bill is one of the most endangered birds in the world. There are approximately 100 left, and each year the population declines by 25%. BirdLife International helps fund a program to save this species from extinction by raising chicks in captivity. You can help by donating here! Donating is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe as payment goes through JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send you unwanted emails. (Pic by JJ Harrison, www.noodlesnacks.com)

About bird life

When I moved to Connecticut from Australia, I had never seen a robin. I thought a woodpecker was a cartoon character. I couldn't understand why everyone else didn't stop and stare in wonder at the sight of a northern cardinal or a blue jay in their garden.

Since then, I've learned a few facts about birds. The most important one? That a goldfinch in the backyard or a raptor soaring in the sky can lift us out of the dark days we all have in life; the confusing days; the monotonous ones; and the days when we take being alive for granted. I want to share my random observations about the birds (and life) of North America, and I hope that you will share some of yours, too, from wherever in the world you live.
